marriage for property and money. The woman would then have the protection of the man’s name and his promise to take care of her. It really has been a form of slavery, but well understood by women who colluded in the process until they woke up and realised that they must change from being second class citizens to individuals.
We live now in a much more liberated and hopefully happier time! Gavin Newsom’s, (the new Governor of California) wife’s will not be called First Lady, but Partner. How’s that for the Age of Enlightenment!
